The 5-M Movement

The questions resonating with the leadership & staff at Oaklawn Church of God: "How are we going to impact our community with the love of Christ?" and “What are going to do with the influence we have?”  We have come to understand that we must become a “5-M MOVEMENT.”

M-1 is the MESSAGE.  “Love the Lord your God… Love others as well as you love yourself.  These two commands are pegs; everything in God's Law and the Prophets hangs from them." (Matt.22:37-40)  This is our foundation, and never changes!

M-2 is MISSION.  Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you.” (Matt.28:19-20)  This is the mission of Jesus, and also never changes!

M-3 is MINISTRIES. This is where Vision must start to come into view, as we ask, “What will the Message & Mission look here, with this group of Jesus’ apprentices, in this city?”  To answer this question, we have gone all the way back to the Vision that led Oaklawn to call me to be Lead Pastor 4 years ago: “Desire for strong ministry to children; strong ministry to youth; and the ability to reach & keep young adults/families.”  We have articulated God’s Vision for Oaklawn this way: Merging faith, family, and culture in order to provide spiritual direction, and help, for the families of our community.  Thus the ministries we have identified as “key” are: 1) Children, 2) the weekend Worship experience: sermon, music, greeting, etc., 3) Community Groups, 4) Students (youth), and 5) Missions, both local & global.

M-4 is METHODS.  This is where Vision begins to get really focused, as those spiritually-gifted and called by God to lead the ministries lead as the Holy Spirit directs them in accordance with His Vision.  The Message & Mission never change, the Ministries change over time, but Methods will be constantly changing!  God places leaders in place, we affirm the spiritual gifting & leadership in those leaders, and allow them the freedom to do the ministry!

M-5 is MULTIPLICATION. Reproducing ourselves happens when the first 4 Ms fall into place.  And as I’ve been studying the book of Nehemiah, I have been learning and re-learning that it takes time. Spiritual growth, numerical growth, two services, three services, satellite locations, planting new congregations… IT… TAKES… TIME!

The time is NOW to stop just calling ourselves a Movement, and to fully embrace, and jump all-in into discovering the Way to BE the Movement of Jesus!  May we own the responsibility to love this city, and may we commit to His Movement for the long-haul!
