In Defense of the Freaks

Recently, in a conversation I was having, it was suggested that I should not use the term, "Jesus Freak" in referring to myself, due to the negative definition of the word "freak."  There was a time when I would have responded with sarcasm and pride, but praise God!  Through Jesus Messiah I am being changed!  As I have learned to do, I simply responded, "OK," with a smile.  That got me to thinking perhaps I needed to do a little investigating the word for myself (again).  The following definitions are from dictionary.com.

 Freak (freek)
-noun

* any abnormal phenomenon or product or unusual object.
Jesus said, "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." -John 14:26 (NIV)  Jesus promises His followers that an abnormal phenomenon will happen in their lives.  What we produce without Jesus is normal, but as He changes us, the results of what happens are different, and in many ways opposite, of what was produced prior to His arrival into our lives.  Having my sins forgiven by the sacrifice of Jesus is an abnormal (supernatural) phenomenon!  Being filled by and being led by the Holy Spirit is without a doubt an abnormal phenomenon.  Having my very nature and being transformed by Jesus is an abnormal phenomenon.  Being in a very real relationship with the Creator of the Universe is an abnormal phenomenon!

* a person or animal on exhibition as an example of a strange deviation from nature.
Paul wrote, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" -2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
Jesus said, "...let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." -Matthew 5:16 (NIV)  Followers of Jesus Messiah are the "light of the world," reflecting the Light of Jesus!  Christians are on exhibition as a strange deviation from nature!  The old nature has gone, the new nature has come!

*a sudden apparently causeless change or turn of events, the mind, etc.
Jesus said. "you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." -Acts 1:8 (NIV)  Continued reading in the book of Acts reveals that a sudden change of mind and turn of events indeed happened (and happens) when the Holy Spirit fills people.  There is no doubt that the cause of such a sudden transformation was in question.  The question, "What has caused these people to speak this way? Maybe they're drunk?" was certainly asked.  To a world that doesn't know God, nor the way of the Cross, nor the power of the Resurrection, the transformed life, both mind and actions, of a Christian appears sudden and causeless.

*SLANG USAGE (3 definitions)
--a person who has withdrawn from normal, rational behavior and activities to pursue one interest or obsession.
Paul wrote, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." -Romans 12:2 (NIV) and "Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you still submit to its rules?" -Colossians 2:20 (NIV) and "For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." -1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV).
Jesus said, "As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you." -John 15:19 (NIV)
A Christian is a person who has withdrawn from the normal behavior and activities of the world to pursue One interest and obsession: Jesus!

--a devoted fan or follower; an enthusiast
Paul wrote, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." -Philippians 1:21 (NIV)
One doesn't get more devoted than to live sold out to what, and Who, they believe... and to be willing to die for that belief.  I can only call myself an enthusiast about Jesus if I am willing to live and die for Him.

--a hippie.
Ummm... ok, I'll give you this one.  But go ahead and look that one up, too... :oD

Hi!  I'm Steve.  And I am a Jesus Freak.
