Oh Be Careful Little Feet Where You Go: Proverbs 5:21

Day 5/30

"For the LORD sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes." - Proverbs 5:21 (NLT)

There are a couple of ways to look at this ancient Hebrew proverb.  One could say that his is a warning like the old kids' song, "Oh be careful little feet where you go..."  I once lived in a city where a store that sold musical instruments had this big sign that read "Jesus Is Watching You."  Since I wasn't sure if that was to deter shoplifting or to warn those zooming by on the interstate to slow down, I went in and asked one day.  I thought, "Maybe the owner is really trying to honor Jesus with his sign."  The answer I received was, "You know what?  There's a lot of Christians in this city, and I figure putting that on the sign would draw 'em in."  Consumerism once again at the heart of the matter... and God sees it clearly.

Another way to view this proverb is as a promise.  Could it be possible that the reason God sees clearly what we do and examines every path is because He loves us?  Does God examine the path behind us or the path before us?  The verses following Proverbs 5:21 indicates that our sins trip us up and tie us down.  We end up lost... and dead... because of our selfishness and the path we choose.  Maybe God examines my path so that He can direct me to a better one.  God sees clearly what I do and what I've done, but He also sees clearly what I'm prone to do.  I know I can trust God because He has already examined the path ahead of me.  The direction of the LORD are righteous!
